The world is a massive and incredibly diverse place. The internets ability to connect us with each other has created access to an endless expanding pool of inspiration from other people globally. What does this mean for people who want to create something today?
Imagine life for a creative lets say, a century ago. Without the internet, inspiration mostly came to people through real life action. A person seeking to be inspired had to find it physically. He or she would have to go somewhere, see something, hear or feel an actual experience before getting inspired to work or create. Even worse, they had to read books. Lots of books.
These scenarios make getting inspired a deliberate and time consuming task. Today, the internet grants us access to an unlimited pool of ideas from creatives around the world. This information can be filtered and tailored by size, color, and style. Even consumed in different formats such as video, audio or visual images in a matter of seconds.
With the internet you can get more inspiration in a day than any of our predecessors could ever dream of in a life time. The internet has silently solved this once daunting task of finding inspiration. As someone who is about to start something creative, how can you take advantage of this? It’s quite simple actually..
For example, if your dream is to run a bakery, you can search through the web for images, articles and resources about baking. And not just anything, but the very best things. Look through the best brands/trends you admire and aspire to be like. You can do this even before you attend your first baking lesson.
The same logic can be applied if you want to shoot a great movie or make really good music. Try to use the internet to simply watch or listen to the best movies or albums that appeal to you. By interacting with these things you are inspiring yourself to create similar great works. Even before you begin, you’ve already mentally positioned yourself to make great things.
A natural way to form this habit of using the internet for inspiration is to follow as many sources as possible on social media. At ES, we spend a lot of time on our social media accounts. So, including a lot of inspiring accounts into our feed or timeline is important for us. Also, try to have a way of saving or collecting the things you may come across that really speak to you. It may seem pointless but it helps.
Subconsciously, whatever we surround ourselves with influence us. By exploring these resources regularly, you’re inspiring yourself with ideas of how to create high quality products. It may take some time to show results but rest assured it’s gradually having an effect on you. When you finally kick off that project you’ll find that you have more and better ideas on how to execute it.
Best of luck!
